Our Chapter:
Beverly Brown
Corporate Public Relations, SAS, Inc.

As a member of the SAS corporate communications team, Beverly Brown feels fortunate to work among a group of high caliber communications professionals. "There is no substitute for being surrounded by people who are firing on all cylinders and operating at the highest possible level," she said. However, she acknowledges that outside knowledge is critical to her growth and development as a communications professional.

Since joining the IABC NC Triangle chapter a decade ago, Brown has found IABC workshops, Web seminars and online resources to be timely, useful and full of practical ideas. In fact, she often refers to her notes and handouts from a 2003 IABC Web seminar on strategic communication. "They're useful when I need to convey a lot of information in the most compelling, concise possible way, which is practically every day," she said.

A graduate of Wingate University with a bachelor's degree in communications, Brown began her career working as a freelance writer for several North Carolina newspapers, including the Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer. "Though I was good at it, I didn't like to write on deadline," she said. After eight years working in journalism, she left to pursue a career in public relations at SAS, where she has worked since 1994.

Brown recommends that IABC members make a commitment to grow and develop. "The resources are there to keep your skills sharp," she said, suggesting participation in one Web seminar per quarter, reading the CW magazine and attending an onsite workshop to meet fellow members.

Brown is also a member of the Public Relations Society of America. She resides in Raleigh.
